IELTS Exam Fees in India: A Breakdown by Test Type

Understanding the different test formats and types offered by IELTS is crucial for determining the associated fees. Here’s a detailed breakdown:

  • Test Format:
    • Pen and Paper Based Test (PBT): It is the classic way to take the IELTS, where you’ll be provided with physical materials to complete the exam. This format involves using pen and paper for all sections: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. You’ll receive booklets containing the test questions and answer sheets to mark your responses. This method might be preferred by individuals who are more comfortable working with physical materials or haven’t had extensive experience with computer-based testing.

  • Computer-Delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS): It is a modern alternative to the traditional pen and paper format, allowing you to take the test on a computer. This potentially more efficient and user-friendly experience caters to individuals comfortable working in a digital environment. Instead of using physical materials, the CD-IELTS presents the test questions and answer options electronically on a computer screen. You’ll use a keyboard and mouse to navigate the test and record your responses, potentially making the process faster and potentially reducing the risk of errors from illegible handwriting. Notably, the speaking test remains face-to-face with a live examiner, regardless of whether you choose the PBT or CD-IELTS format.

  • Test Type:
    • Academic Test: Designed for individuals seeking entry into undergraduate or postgraduate programs at universities abroad.
    • General Training Test: Caters to those aiming for work experience, secondary education, or immigration purposes.
    • UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration): A specialized version of the Academic or General Training test specifically for applicants to the UK immigration system.

  • Five Weeks or Less: Unfortunately, canceling your test within five weeks of the scheduled date generally results in forfeiting the entire fee. However, exceptions might be made in documented cases of medical emergencies. Under these circumstances, you’ll need to provide valid medical documentation to qualify for a full or partial refund.
