What is IELTS Indicator?
IELTS Indicator is a new online IELTS test designed to support test-takers during the COVID-19 situation to help keep their education goals on track and give exam from home. Test takers can take it from the comfort and safety of their homes and prepare them for IELTS. The test includes Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections and uses official IELTS test questions. It is marked using IELTS test criteria by qualified IELTS examiners and test-takers will receive an indicative score for each section.
Who should take IELTS Indicator?
The IELTS Indicator is only available as an Online Academic test. It has been designed to support students’ progress in their University and Educational Institution applications during the COVID-19 crisis and has not been developed for migration purposes.
Where and how often can this test be taken?
IELTS Indicator can be taken from home on a laptop or desktop computer (Mac or PC only) with a stable internet connection. The test will be offered online once a week at a scheduled time.
How and when can test takers register for the IELTS Indicator test?
Test takers can register for the test either from British Council or IDP and bookings will be open from 22 April 2020. We are exploring how we can involve you, our trusted partners in promoting it, and we will share more information on how you can be involved with IELTS Indicator shortly.
What is the duration of the test?
The Listening, Reading and Writing sections will be for approximately 2 hours 45 minutes and each section is time-bound. The test needs to be completed in one sitting and the test taker cannot pause the test and come back later. The Speaking test will be conducted separately.
When will the result be released?
The test taker will receive their result within seven days of completing all sections of the test.
Will test-takers get a score for each section?
IELTS Test takers will receive an indicative score for each section along with an overall indicative score that will help them in exam preparation at home.
Which universities and colleges accept IELTS Indicator scores?
IELTS Indicator does not replace an in-person IELTS test at a test centre. As the test is accepted by some organizations, before booking, test takers should check with their university or educational institution.
How much does the test cost?
The test booking fee is US $149.

Examination Rules
- The candidates require an ID issued by government, for example- passport.
- No headphones are allowed.
- There should be no one else present in the room.
- Talking to anyone is not allowed during the test.
- There shouldn’t be any note taking by the candidate. Use of pen and paper is not allowed during the test
- The candidate should not look off screen or leave his her seat during the examination.
- Pay attention to the time limit.
- Distractions must be avoided.

TYPES OF QUESTIONS
1. SELECT THE REAL WORD
(Some words appear on the screen and the candidate has to select the correct words.)
- Attention should be paid to the spellings.
- Candidate should select only if he or she actually knows the word.
2. SELECT THE REAL WORD( LISTENING)
This question is quite similar to the first question but here the candidate has to listen very carefully and select only those words which are correct.
3. SENTENCE COMPLETION (Type the missing letters to complete the provided test)
4. DESCRIBE THE PROVIDED IMAGE IN WRITING
The description should be specific and use appropriate lexical resource. The candidate should write at least one complete sentence to describe the image.
He/she can write more if time permits.
5. DESCRIBE AN IMAGE (SPEAKING)
The candidate should clearly speak the English word for the provided image.
Example: – This is a cat.
Adjectives can be used, for example:-
This is a black cat.
6. TYPE THE SENTENCE SPOKEN( played 3 times)
First, try to write the sentence, listen to it again to complete any missing word. Listen to the sentence again to double check
7. SPEAK AND RECORD YOURSELF SAYING A WRITTEN SENTENCE
(The candidate should quickly scan the written sentence and start recording)
8. ANSWER A SPOKEN OR WRITTEN QUESTION
FOR EXAMPLE
Describe your favourite subject at school.
- What is it?
- Why do you like it?
- How long have you studied it
9. RESPOND IN WRITING TO A WRITTEN QUESTION
(This part can be used by the candidate to use the knowledge of lexical resource, write complex sentence. It is important to edit the content to reduce the errors)
10. VIDEO INTERVIEW( NOT GRADED)
- Writing (3-5 minutes) on a provided topic
- Speaking (1-3 minutes about a topic, for example- Speak about an interesting plant or animal)
